Dickie Eklund, a talented boxer from a town inflicted by poverty and crime, dreams to become an invincible fighter. He is the pride of his town, which backs him to win a bout, each time he steps inside the boxing ring. The fame and attention Dickie enjoys, has not forayed into the life of his half brother Micky Ward. Micky often helps his brother, by acting as his sparring partner. Dickie’s self belief that he can crush any opponent to win the championship belt receives a painful jolt, when Sugar Ray Leonard wins a one-sided match again him. After this humiliating defeat, Dickie loses hold over his mental composure and soon finds himself in the grip of addiction, violence and imprisonment. Dickie’s self-destroying habits not only ruin his career, but also the hopes of his family, who wanted to see him rule the boxing ring one day. Meanwhile, Micky, in an effort to get his family out of despair, starts taking boxing seriously and within no time, he becomes one of the contenders for the championship belt. On being released, Dickie decides to make amends by training his brother to take on Shea Neary for the championship!
